Recognition of your qualification

Working as a truck driver is not regulated in Germany. With a qualification from abroad you do not need professional recognition in order to work. A formal finding of equivalence does help employers assess your qualification, though – and for entry from a country outside the EU as a skilled worker with vocational training it is a requirement. Equivalence is assessed by the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK); applications are handled centrally by IHK FOSA. The Recognition Finder on anerkennung-in-deutschland.de shows which body applies to you.

Driving licence and basic qualification

For goods transport by road with a truck for which you need licence category C or CE, the Professional Drivers Qualification Act (Berufskraftfahrerqualifikationsgesetz) requires a basic qualification in addition to the driving licence: from age 18 the basic qualification (exam at a Chamber of Industry and Commerce, or training as a professional driver), from age 21 the accelerated basic qualification is enough (instruction at a recognised training centre and a theory exam at an IHK). You may keep using a driving licence from the EU or the EEA after you move. A licence from another country remains valid for six months after you move to Germany; after that you need a German one. How much falls away when you exchange it depends on the country and the category (Annex 11 of the Driving Licence Regulation, Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung) – the licensing authority (Fahrerlaubnisbehörde) is responsible.

Your route to Germany – depending on where you come from

Which German do you need?

For skilled workers with vocational training, the law sets no fixed language level. The German mission abroad checks whether your knowledge fits the job and describes this in different ways – ask there. For the recognition partnership, at least adequate German (A2) is required. Which German an employer expects in daily work is stated in the job ad or settled in the interview.
