What you do in this job

As a rule, a completed degree in civil engineering is required; for management roles or specialised tasks usually a master's degree. You work, for example, for building and civil engineering companies, in engineering offices, in the property sector, in the public service – such as municipal building authorities – or in the building materials industry.

Civil engineer pay – by federal state

The figures come from the Entgeltatlas (pay atlas) of the Federal Employment Agency: median gross monthly pay of employees in full-time work, reference date 31.12.2025, across all age groups and industries. Half earn more than the median, half earn less. Your pay depends on the employer, collective agreement, experience and region; after tax and social insurance, less is left as net pay.

Recognition of your qualification

The title “Ingenieur/in” (engineer) is protected under the engineering laws of the federal states. To work, you generally do not need professional recognition with a foreign qualification – but without a certificate of equivalence you may not call yourself “Ingenieur/in”. The procedure is called “permission to use the professional title Ingenieur/in” (Genehmigung zum Führen der Berufsbezeichnung Ingenieur/in); the responsible body depends on the federal state – according to the Recognition Finder, for example, for Cologne it is the district government (Bezirksregierung) of Cologne, for Munich in civil engineering the Bavarian Chamber of Engineers for Construction (Bayerische Ingenieurekammer-Bau), and for Hamburg the Authority for Science, Research and Equality (Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung). One requirement is that your main residence is in the federal state, that you work there, or that you will soon live or work there; you do not have to prove German language skills for this. For a visa and the EU Blue Card, your university degree must be recognised or comparable to a German one (anabin, otherwise ZAB certificate assessment).

Your route to Germany – depending on where you come from

Which German do you need?

For the EU Blue Card there is no statutory language requirement. For skilled workers with a degree, the law names no fixed level; the German mission abroad checks whether your knowledge fits the job. Which language is spoken in the team is stated in the job ad or settled in the interview.
